Rutherford's nuclear model, based on the alpha-particle scattering experiment, placed nearly all the atom's mass and its positive charge in a tiny central nucleus with electrons orbiting it, but the model failed to explain atomic stability and the discrete spectral lines of atoms.

Rutherford's atomic model: Based on the results of the alpha-particle scattering experiment (most alpha particles passed through the gold foil undeflected, but a small fraction were deflected through large angles, and a very few bounced almost straight back), Rutherford proposed:

  1. Almost the entire mass of the atom, and all of its positive charge, is concentrated in an extremely small central region called the nucleus (radius ~10^-15 to 10^-14 m, compared to the atom's overall size of ~10^-10 m).
  2. The electrons, being very light and negatively charged, revolve around this nucleus in circular orbits, much as planets orbit the sun, held in orbit by the electrostatic (Coulomb) force of attraction between the nucleus and the electron, which provides the necessary centripetal force.
  3. Most of the atom is empty space, which is why most alpha particles pass through undeflected; only those that pass very close to the nucleus are strongly deflected by its concentrated positive charge.

Drawbacks of the model:

  1. Instability of the atom: According to classical electromagnetic theory, an accelerating (orbiting) charged particle must continuously radiate electromagnetic energy. As the electron loses energy this way, it should spiral inward and eventually fall into the nucleus in a fraction of a second, making the atom highly unstable - contrary to the observed stability of atoms in nature. …
