The work function is the minimum energy needed to free an electron from a metal's surface, and it sets the threshold frequency for the photoelectric effect.

In a metal, free electrons are held inside by attractive forces from the positive ions of the lattice, so an electron requires a certain minimum energy to escape from the metal surface into free space. This minimum energy is called the work function of the metal, denoted ϕ0\phi_0 (or W0W_0), and is usually expressed in electron volts (eV).

The work function depends on the nature of the metal surface and is related to the threshold frequency ν0\nu_0 (the minimum frequency of incident light needed to cause photoelectric emission) by:

ϕ0=hu0\phi_0 = h u_0

where hh is Planck's constant.
