Electrons inside a metal are bound by attractive forces from the positive ions; the least energy that must be supplied to just pull a free electron out through the surface is the work function.

Explanation

Inside a metal, free (conduction) electrons move about, but they cannot normally leave the metal surface spontaneously because of the attractive forces exerted by the positive ions of the metal lattice - the electron near the surface is held back by this attraction. To escape from the metal, an electron at the surface must be given at least a minimum amount of energy to overcome this attraction.

This minimum energy required to just eject the least tightly bound (surface) electron from a metal, with zero kinetic energy left over, is called the work function of the metal, denoted ϕ0\phi_0 (or W0W_0). It is a characteristic property of the metal (e.g., about 2.14 eV for sodium, 4.5 eV for platinum) and is usually measured in electron-volts (eV).

In the photoelectric effect, this concept enters Einstein's photoelectric equation:

KEmax=hν−ϕ0KE_{max} = h\nu - \phi_0 …
