Photosensitive substances (e.g. caesium, potassium, sodium, lithium) emit electrons when illuminated by light of suitable frequency - hence the name.

When light of frequency above a certain threshold falls on certain materials, electrons are ejected from their surface. This is the photoelectric effect, and materials that show it are called photosensitive substances.

The alkali metals - caesium, potassium, sodium and lithium - have low work functions, so they can emit photoelectrons even with visible light. This is why they are the common examples of photosensitive materials and are used in photocells.
