Einstein's photoelectric equation states that the maximum kinetic energy of an emitted photoelectron equals the photon energy minus the metal's work function.

Einstein explained the photoelectric effect by treating light as a stream of photons, each of energy E = hν (h = Planck's constant, ν = frequency of incident light). When a photon strikes the metal surface, it is absorbed entirely by a single electron. Part of this energy, equal to the work function φ0 (the minimum energy needed to free the electron from the metal surface), is used to liberate the electron; the remainder appears as the kinetic energy of the emitted photoelectron.

For the most energetic (surface) electrons, this gives Einstein's photoelectric equation:

K_max = hν - φ0
