The lymphatic system returns escaped tissue fluid to the blood, carries immune cells, transports nutrients and hormones, and specifically enables fat absorption through the intestinal lacteals.

As blood flows through the tiny capillaries within the tissues, some of its water and small dissolved substances seep out into the intercellular spaces, becoming interstitial or tissue fluid, while the larger proteins and formed elements stay behind in the vessels. The body does not let this escaped fluid simply accumulate in the tissues — the widespread network of vessels making up the lymphatic system gathers it up and returns it to the major veins, restoring it to general circulation; once inside the lymphatic vessels this fluid is called lymph. …
