Xylem is built of four cell types. Tracheids are single, elongated, dead cells with tapering, pitted (unperforated) walls, conducting water comparatively slowly from cell to cell — they are the sole conducting element in most gymnosperms and pteridophytes. Vessels, the dominant conducting element in angiosperms, are made of several shorter, wider, dead cells joined end to end through true perforations, forming one continuous open tube that conducts water rapidly and efficiently. Xylem fibres are dead, thick-walled cells contributing mechanical strength rather than conduction. Xylem parenchyma is the only living element of xylem, used for lateral conduction and storage.

Phloem is likewise built of four cell types. Sieve tube elements are living cells that, unusually, lose their nucleus at maturity while remaining functional, joined end to end through perforated sieve plates that let cytoplasmic strands connect adjacent elements and carry food along the tube. Companion cells are living, nucleate cells lying alongside each sieve tube element, connected to it through numerous pit fields, and are thought to help regulate the nucleus-less sieve tube's activity — they are notably absent in gymnosperms. Phloem fibres are dead, thick-walled cells providing mechanical support — in most plants, the only dead element of phloem. Phloem parenchyma is living, used for storage, though generally absent in most monocots. …
