The rate and violence of this reaction, however, is very different across the group. Lithium reacts comparatively gently with cold water (although the reaction is still strongly exothermic overall). Sodium reacts vigorously -- the heat evolved is often enough to melt the small piece of sodium into a moving, hissing globule on the water's surface. Potassium reacts even more violently, and the hydrogen gas evolved usually catches fire spontaneously from the heat of reaction, often producing a lilac flame characteristic of potassium. …
