Polyembryony is the condition in which a single seed contains more than one embryo, rather than the usual single zygotic embryo. It was first reported by Leeuwenhoek in the genus Citrus, which remains one of its best-known examples along with mango.

Polyembryony commonly arises when, in addition to the normal zygotic embryo (formed by syngamy), some of the diploid cells of the surrounding nucellus begin dividing on their own and also develop into embryos -- a phenomenon called nucellar embryony, which is itself a form of apomixis, since these extra embryos form without any fertilisation.
