The mature dicot seed is enclosed by a seed coat, which develops from the ovule's integuments and comprises an outer, usually harder layer, the testa, and an inner layer, the tegmen. Within this protective covering lies the embryo.

The embryo itself consists of an embryonal axis bearing two cotyledons (seed leaves), which are often thick and swollen with stored food, especially in non-albuminous seeds. The part of the embryonal axis situated above the level where the cotyledons are attached is the epicotyl, which terminates in the plumule -- the embryonic shoot apex that will give rise to the shoot system on germination. The part of the axis below the cotyledons' attachment is the hypocotyl, which terminates in the radicle -- the embryonic root apex, tipped by a protective root cap -- that will give rise to the root system. …
