Albuminous seeds are those in which the endosperm, formed by triple fusion and subsequent development, persists in the mature seed and remains a prominent tissue that stores food to nourish the embryo during germination. Wheat, maize and castor are common examples of albuminous seeds.

Non-albuminous (or exalbuminous) seeds are those in which the endosperm is completely consumed and absorbed by the growing embryo during seed development itself, so none remains by the time the seed matures.
