Defining impedance. Impedance ZZ generalises resistance/reactance to a circuit with more than one element in series, defined through the Ohm's-law-like relation V=IZV=IZ between rms (or peak) voltage and current, measured in ohms.

Setting up the LR phasor diagram. With the shared current II as reference, VR=IRV_R=IR is in phase with II, while VL=IXLV_L=IX_L leads II by 90∘90^\circ, so its phasor is drawn perpendicular to VRV_R's.

Adding the phasors. The resultant voltage is the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by VRV_R and VLV_L:

V=VR2+VL2=IR2+XL2V = \sqrt{V_R^2+V_L^2} = I\sqrt{R^2+X_L^2}

Comparing with V=IZV=IZ:

Z=R2+XL2Z = \sqrt{R^2+X_L^2}

Phase angle. From the same triangle, …
