Principle. In frequency modulation, the message signal controls the carrier's instantaneous frequency rather than its amplitude: wherever the message is at its positive peak, the carrier's frequency rises the most above its centre (unmodulated) value; wherever the message is at its negative peak, the carrier's frequency falls the most below the centre value; when the message crosses zero, the carrier is momentarily back at exactly its centre frequency.
