Q.Explain space-wave propagation and define 'line-of-sight communication'. Why must space-wave (very-high-frequency and above) communication normally rely on tall antennas or satellite relays rather than on reflection from the ionosphere?

Space-wave propagation. At frequencies too high to be reflected by the ionosphere and too high for the ground wave to carry any meaningful distance, a wave can still reach a receiver by travelling in essentially a straight line directly from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna.

Line-of-sight communication. A link of this kind, in which the receiving antenna lies within a direct, unobstructed line-of-sight of the transmitting antenna, is called line-of-sight (LOS) communication.

Why not the ionosphere or the ground. Very-high-frequency waves (roughly above 30 MHz) are above the critical frequency of the ionosphere for essentially any realistic angle of incidence, so they pass straight through the ionised layers into space instead of being reflected back; at the same time, the ground absorbs these high frequencies so strongly that the ground wave dies out almost immediately. With neither the ionosphere nor the ground available to guide the wave, communication at these frequencies is only possible along a direct path -- which is why tall transmitting/receiving towers (to push the horizon further out) or satellite relays (placed high enough to keep an unbroken line-of-sight path) are used instead.

✓Final answer

Space-wave/line-of-sight propagation sends the wave in a direct straight line; VHF-and-above frequencies must use it because they pass through the ionosphere unreflected and their ground wave dies out almost immediately, leaving height (tall antennas) or satellites as the only ways to extend the direct path's range.
