TV signals (very high / ultra-high frequency) travel only by line-of-sight and are not reflected by the ionosphere, so they cannot reach far-away places directly along the curved Earth; a satellite placed high above re-transmits them over a much larger visible area.

TV broadcast frequencies are too high to be reflected by the ionosphere (sky-wave propagation fails), and ground-wave propagation is heavily attenuated over long distances at these frequencies. So direct transmission is limited to the line of sight, which is blocked by the Earth's curvature beyond a short distance from a tall antenna.
