In space wave propagation the signal travels essentially in a straight line between antennas; because the Earth curves away, this line-of-sight path is available only up to a limited distance set by the antenna heights.

Space wave propagation is the mode by which radio waves (typically VHF and above, frequencies above about 30 MHz) travel directly from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna through the lower atmosphere (troposphere), either as a direct line-of-sight ray or as a combination of the direct wave and a wave reflected off the ground. It is used for TV broadcast, FM radio, and similar line-of-sight communication (these frequencies are too high to reflect off the ionosphere the way sky waves do, and too high to diffract efficiently around the Earth's curvature the way ground waves do at lower frequencies).

Why limited to short distances: Because the Earth's surface curves, a straight line from a transmitting antenna of height hTh_T eventually goes below the horizon; the receiving antenna, at height hRh_R, can only pick up the signal if it also lies within line of sight. The maximum distance (range) up to which the direct wave can be received is

d=2RhT+2RhRd = \sqrt{2Rh_T} + \sqrt{2Rh_R} …
