Every communication system is built from five essential blocks in sequence: source, transmitter, channel (exposed to noise), receiver, and destination.

A labelled block diagram of a generic communication system consists of the following blocks connected in series, in order:

  1. Information Source — generates the message to be communicated (e.g. voice, data).
  2. Transmitter — converts (encodes/modulates) the message signal into a form suitable for transmission through the channel; it may include a transducer.
  3. Channel (Transmission Medium) — the physical medium (wire, free space, optical fibre) connecting transmitter and receiver, through which the signal travels; a Noise source is shown feeding into the channel, representing unwanted disturbances picked up along the way. …
