Q.X-rays and gamma rays both lie at the extreme high-frequency end of the electromagnetic spectrum but are produced in very different ways. Briefly describe how each is typically produced, and explain why gamma rays generally have even shorter wavelengths than X-rays.

How X-rays are produced. In an X-ray tube, electrons are accelerated through a large potential difference and made to strike a heavy metal target (such as tungsten) at high speed. The sudden, violent deceleration of these fast electrons on impact converts a large fraction of their kinetic energy directly into high-frequency electromagnetic radiation -- the X-rays -- with the ATOM's outer electron structure of the target playing only a secondary role.

How gamma rays are produced. Gamma rays originate from an entirely different, and much deeper, source: rearrangements of the particles (protons and neutrons) WITHIN an atomic nucleus itself, as happens during radioactive decay or a nuclear reaction. A nucleus dropping from a higher-energy configuration to a lower-energy one emits the excess energy directly as a gamma-ray photon. …
