Two defining characteristics of electromagnetic waves: they are transverse in nature, and they propagate through vacuum at a fixed speed c without needing a medium.

An electromagnetic wave consists of an oscillating electric field E and magnetic field B, mutually perpendicular to each other and both perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation — this makes it a transverse wave, unlike sound which is longitudinal.

Unlike mechanical waves, electromagnetic waves do not need a material medium to travel; they can propagate through vacuum. Their speed in vacuum is a universal constant, c = 1/√(ε₀μ₀) ≈ 3 × 10⁸ m/s, the same for all electromagnetic waves regardless of wavelength.
