When a slow ('thermal') neutron is absorbed by a 92235U^{235}_{92}\text{U} nucleus, it forms a highly excited, unstable compound nucleus that almost immediately splits (fissions) into two lighter fragment nuclei of roughly comparable, medium size, together with two or three newly freed neutrons and a very large release of energy (about 200 MeV200\ \text{MeV} per event, since the fragments sit higher up the binding-energy-per-nucleon curve than the original uranium nucleus did, Section 8.7).
