Q.Explain the meaning of E-Business and E-Commerce, and discuss the factors responsible for their growth.
E-business, or electronic business, refers to the conduct of business activities — production, purchase, inventory management, marketing, finance, human resources and customer service — using computers, information technology and electronic networks such as the internet. E-commerce, or electronic commerce, is narrower: it refers specifically to buying and selling of goods and services, and the transfer of related funds, through electronic means, chiefly the internet. Every act of e-commerce is part of the broader field of e-business, but e-business also includes many internal, non-transactional activities, such as internal communication and production planning, that are not e-commerce.
The growth of e-business and e-commerce in India over the last two decades can be explained by several factors. Rising internet and smartphone penetration and cheaper mobile data have brought many more people online. Growing comfort with online transactions among both urban and rural consumers has reduced hesitation about buying or paying digitally. Supportive government policies encouraging a less-cash, digitally connected economy have provided the regulatory push, while the entry of a large number of firms offering goods and services online has widened consumer choice. For businesses, going online lowers the cost of reaching customers across a wide geographic area, while for consumers it offers convenience, wider choice, and the ability to compare products before buying.
Together, these demand-side and supply-side factors explain why e-business and e-commerce are treated as central emerging trends in the Andhra Pradesh Intermediate Commerce syllabus.
E-business is the use of computers and electronic networks to run all of a firm's activities, while e-commerce is the narrower activity of buying, selling and transferring funds electronically; both have grown rapidly in India due to rising internet/smartphone penetration, cheaper data, supportive government policy, growing consumer comfort with digital transactions, and increasing business participation online.
