Photoelectric effect: electrons are ejected from a metal surface by incident light, but only if the light's frequency exceeds a minimum (threshold) frequency characteristic of the metal.

When light of sufficiently high frequency falls on a metal surface, electrons (called photoelectrons) are emitted from the surface. This phenomenon is called the photoelectric effect.

Key observations:

  • Emission occurs only above a certain threshold frequency ν0\nu_0, which depends on the metal.
  • The maximum kinetic energy of emitted electrons depends on the frequency of light, not its intensity.
  • Increasing intensity increases the number of photoelectrons emitted (photocurrent), not their maximum kinetic energy.
  • Emission is (almost) instantaneous — no measurable time lag. …
