Photosensitive substances (e.g. caesium, potassium, sodium, lithium) emit electrons when light falls on them; they are named so because they are sensitive to light.

Certain metals, especially the alkali metals, have a low work function, meaning only a small amount of energy is needed to free an electron from their surface. When light of a high enough frequency falls on such a metal, electrons are ejected. This is the photoelectric effect.

Examples of photosensitive substances: caesium, potassium, sodium and lithium.
