The photoelectric effect is the ejection of electrons from a metal surface caused by light of sufficiently high frequency falling on it, and it demonstrates the particle (photon) nature of light.

When electromagnetic radiation (light) of frequency ν, greater than a certain minimum value called the threshold frequency ν₀ (characteristic of the metal), is incident on a (usually alkali) metal surface, electrons are emitted instantaneously from the surface. These emitted electrons are called photoelectrons, and the phenomenon is called the photoelectric effect.
