The photoelectric effect is the phenomenon of electron emission from a metal surface caused by incident electromagnetic radiation (typically ultraviolet or visible light) of frequency above a certain threshold value characteristic of the metal.

When light of sufficiently high frequency falls on the surface of certain metals (such as caesium, potassium, or zinc), electrons are ejected from the surface almost instantaneously. This is called the photoelectric effect, and the ejected electrons are called photoelectrons.

Key experimental features:

  • Emission occurs only if the incident frequency ν\nu is greater than or equal to a threshold (or cut-off) frequency ν0\nu_0, which depends on the metal; below ν0\nu_0, no electrons are emitted no matter how intense the light is.
  • The maximum kinetic energy of the emitted electrons depends only on the frequency of the incident light, not on its intensity.
  • The number of photoelectrons emitted per second (photoelectric current) is proportional to the intensity of the incident light. …
