Each photon of light gives all its energy hνh\nu to one electron; part of it is used to free the electron (work function ϕ0\phi_0), and the rest becomes its kinetic energy.

Einstein explained the photoelectric effect by treating light as a stream of photons, each carrying energy hνh\nu (where hh is Planck's constant and ν\nu is the frequency of the incident light). When a photon strikes a metal surface, it is absorbed entirely by a single electron. Part of this energy, equal to the work function ϕ0\phi_0 of the metal, is used to free the electron from the metal surface; the remaining energy appears as the electron's kinetic energy.

For the most energetic photoelectrons emitted (those requiring the least additional energy to escape), Einstein's photoelectric equation is:

KEmax=hν−ϕ0KE_{max} = h\nu - \phi_0
