Ravi's strategy — silently repeating the phone number until he finishes dialling — is an example of maintenance rehearsal, a control process that operates within short-term memory (STM). Maintenance rehearsal works purely through repetition: repeating information, silently or aloud, keeps it available for as long as the repetition continues, but as soon as the repetition stops, the information is lost from STM. Because this is exactly what happens once Ravi finishes dialling and stops repeating the number, the number is quickly lost — his strategy is doing precisely what maintenance rehearsal is meant to do (keep information available briefly for an immediate task), and nothing more.

The reason this fails to create a lasting memory is that maintenance rehearsal, unlike elaborative rehearsal, never connects the new information (the phone number) to anything already stored in Ravi's long-term memory. Elaborative rehearsal is the control process that actually transfers information from STM into long-term memory, and it works by building meaningful associations between the new material and existing knowledge — for example, noticing that part of the number matches a familiar date, or that certain digits form a recognisable pattern. …
