Q.How are maintenance rehearsals different from elaborative rehearsals?
Maintenance rehearsal and elaborative rehearsal are both control processes that involve repeating or working with information, but they differ sharply in method, purpose, and outcome.
Maintenance rehearsal operates within short-term memory (STM). As the name suggests, it 'maintains' information purely through repetition — repeating the material silently or aloud, over and over, without necessarily analysing what it means. Information kept alive this way survives only as long as the repetition continues; the moment such repetition stops, the information is lost from STM. Maintenance rehearsal is therefore a holding strategy, not a strategy for building lasting memory.
Elaborative rehearsal, by contrast, is the control process through which information actually moves from STM into long-term memory (LTM). Rather than simply repeating the 'to be retained' information, elaborative rehearsal attempts to connect it to information that already exists in LTM — analysing the material in terms of the various associations it can be linked to. For example, remembering the meaning of the word 'humanity' becomes easier if the meanings of related concepts such as compassion, truth, and benevolence are already established in memory; elaborative rehearsal is exactly this process of building such connections. The number of associations a person is able to create around a new piece of information determines how permanent that information becomes in memory — richer elaboration produces more durable memory.
Maintenance rehearsal is repetition that only keeps information temporarily active in short-term memory and disappears once repetition stops; elaborative rehearsal analyses and connects new information to existing long-term memory associations, and it is this connecting process — not repetition alone — that actually transfers information into permanent long-term storage.
