Image-based mnemonics include the keyword method (linking an unfamiliar foreign word to a similar-sounding, already-known keyword through a vivid interacting image, useful for vocabulary learning) and the method of loci (mentally placing items to be remembered at points along a familiar physical route, then recalling them in order by mentally retracing that route — useful for remembering items in a fixed sequence).
Organisation-based mnemonics include chunking (combining smaller units of information into larger, meaningful chunks to overcome short-term memory's limited capacity) and the first letter technique (building a memorable word or sentence out of the first letters of the items to be remembered, such as VIBGYOR for the colours of the rainbow). …
