Forgetting takes place for several distinct reasons, and psychologists have proposed a number of theories to account for it, three of which have received the most serious attention.

Trace decay (disuse) theory, the earliest explanation, proposes that memory traces — physical changes in the nervous system produced by learning — simply fade away when unused for a long time. This theory has been shown to be inadequate: if it were correct, people who sleep after learning (giving traces no chance to be 'used') should forget more than people who stay awake, but experimental results show the reverse, with the waking condition producing more forgetting than the sleeping condition.

Interference theory, which largely replaced trace decay, holds that forgetting is caused by competition between different sets of associations at the time of retrieval, not by any of those associations decaying. Interference can be proactive (earlier learning interferes with recalling later learning) or retroactive (later learning interferes with recalling earlier learning), and this has been demonstrated using controlled experimental designs comparing experimental and control groups.

Retrieval failure, proposed by Tulving and associates, holds that forgetting can occur simply because the retrieval cues needed to access a memory are absent or inappropriate at the moment of recall — the information itself may still be safely stored. Providing the right cues, such as category names, can often restore access to information that had seemed completely forgotten. …
