Part (a)

Kabir (c. 1440-1518), the weaver-poet of Varanasi, is one of the great voices of the nirguna bhakti tradition - devotion to a formless divine beyond Hindu-Muslim labels. His spiritual lineage traces to Ramananda (c. 1400-1470), a Vaishnava reformer in the Ramanuja tradition who broke with Brahmanical exclusivity by accepting disciples from all castes and communities - weavers, cobblers and women alike. Legend holds that Kabir lay on the ghat steps so that Ramananda, stepping on him in the pre-dawn dark, would utter "Ram", which Kabir claimed as his initiation mantra. Under Ramananda's influence Kabir stressed direct devotion over ritual and mocked both Hindu priests and Muslim mullahs. …
