Part (a): Kabir taught devotion to one formless God reached through love and a true Guru, rejecting caste, idolatry, ritual and the authority of both Vedas and Quran — a syncretic message preserved in his dohas.

Part (a)

Kabir was among the most radical and influential of the nirguna bhakti saints, active in north India around the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. His verses survive in three main traditions — the Bijak (preserved by the Kabirpanthis of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh), the Kabir Granthavali (associated with the Dadupanthis of Rajasthan) and the compositions included in the Sikh Guru Granth Sahib. Because they were composed and transmitted orally in different regions and languages, the poems attributed to him vary, and scholars debate which are authentically his; but a clear vision runs through them.

At the centre of Kabir's teaching is a single, formless and attributeless God (nirguna), beyond all names, images and places. He addressed this one reality by many names drawn from both traditions — Allah, Khuda, Rahim, Rama, Hari, Govinda — to make the point that these are only labels for the same truth. From Hindu thought he drew the idea of union with the formless Absolute; from Islam, especially Sufism, he drew an uncompromising monotheism and the language of intense divine love. …
