Two common forms of family based on rules of residence are patrilocal, where the couple lives with the husband's family, and matrilocal, where they live with the wife's family.

Family structures across societies are incredibly diverse, reflecting varied cultural norms, economic systems, and historical trajectories. One fundamental way societies organize families is through rules of residence, which dictate where a newly married couple is expected to live. These rules significantly shape the composition, dynamics, and social roles within a family unit.

Patrilocal Residence

Patrilocal residence is a family form where a married couple settles with or near the husband's parents. This means the bride moves into the groom's parental home or a dwelling close by. It is one of the most widespread residential patterns globally, historically prevalent in many agricultural societies and still common in numerous cultures, including large parts of India.

The term "patrilocal" combines "patri-" (father) and "local" (place), indicating residence with the father's family.

In such societies, sons are typically expected to remain with their parents, contributing to the family's labour and eventually inheriting property or status. The arrival of a new daughter-in-law strengthens the husband's family unit, often leading to the formation of large joint or extended families where multiple generations live under one roof or in close proximity. This arrangement reinforces patriarchal structures, as authority and decision-making power typically reside with the elder males of the household.
