The three terms — cost, costing and cost accounting — are closely connected but are not the same, and an examiner expects the distinction to be drawn clearly.

Cost. Cost is the amount of expenditure, actual or notional, incurred on or attributable to a specified thing or activity — a unit of product, a job, a process or a service. It is essentially an amount — a figure in rupees representing what a thing costs.

Costing. Costing is the technique and the process of ascertaining that cost. It is the how — the set of principles and rules by which the cost of a product or service is worked out. For example, adding up the material, labour and expenses of a job to find what that job cost is an act of costing.

Cost accounting. Cost accounting is wider than costing. It is the formal system of accounts that records, classifies, summarises, allocates and analyses costs — maintaining the cost ledgers and cost sheets, apportioning overheads, reconciling with the financial accounts, and presenting the results to management for cost control and decision-making. Costing is one part of what a cost accounting system does.

The relationship can be summed up in one sentence: cost is the figure to be found, costing is the technique used to find it, and cost accounting is the complete system within which that technique is applied and the results are recorded, analysed and reported.

✓Final answer

Cost is an amount — the expenditure attributable to a thing; costing is a process — the technique of ascertaining that cost; and cost accounting is a system — the formal set of accounts that records, classifies, analyses and reports costs for control and decision-making. Cost is what is found, costing is how it is found, and cost accounting is the system in which it is found and used.
