- Job costing. Cost is ascertained separately for each job or work order, treated as a distinct cost unit. Suited to: printing presses, repair workshops, made-to-order furniture.
- Batch costing. A batch of identical items is treated as one cost unit, and cost per item is the batch cost divided by the number in the batch. Suited to: manufacture of medicines, biscuits, ready-made garments, components made in batches.
- Contract (terminal) costing. A form of job costing for large, long-duration jobs done at a site away from the factory, each contract being a cost unit. Suited to: building construction, roads, bridges, dams.
- Process costing. Used where a product passes through several continuous processes, the output of one becoming the input of the next; cost is ascertained process by process. Suited to: sugar, chemicals, paper, textiles, refineries.
- Operating (service) costing. Used to ascertain the cost of rendering a service rather than making a product; the cost unit is a service unit. Suited to: transport (per passenger-km), electricity supply (per kWh), hospitals, hotels.
- Unit (output/single) costing. Used where a single uniform product is produced continuously, so cost per unit is total cost divided by output. Suited to: cement, bricks, mining, dairy. (The cost sheet studied in this chapter is used under this method.) …
