The direct (productive) labour cost method of absorbing factory overhead charges overhead to jobs in proportion to the direct wages they incur.
- Overhead rate = (Factory overhead ÷ Direct labour cost) × 100.
- Overhead charged to a job = that rate × the job's direct wages.
- Example: if factory overhead is Rs. 50,000 and direct wages Rs. 1,00,000, the rate is 50%; a job with Rs. 2,000 direct wages absorbs Rs. 1,000 overhead.
