1. Introduction

As a part of our educational activity, a visit to the Civil Hospital, __________ (city), was arranged on __________ (date of visit). The main purpose of the visit was to study the working, organisation and services of a large public hospital and to understand how such a public-service institution serves the community. The visit was conducted from __________ a.m. to __________ p.m. under the guidance of our teacher.

2. Observations

During the visit, the following were observed:

  • Reception and OPD: There is a well-organised reception and registration counter. The Out-Patient Department (OPD) handles a large number of patients daily, with separate windows for registration and case papers.
  • Departments: The hospital has various specialised departments such as Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Eye and ENT, each with qualified doctors and nursing staff.
  • Emergency and Ambulance: A 24-hour Casualty/Emergency ward and ambulance service are available for urgent cases.
  • Wards: Clean and well-arranged general and special wards are provided for admitted (in-patient) patients.
  • Laboratory and Pharmacy: Pathology laboratory, X-ray/sonography facilities and a medical store providing medicines at low/free cost were seen.
  • Free/subsidised service: Being a government Civil Hospital, treatment, medicines and tests are provided free of cost or at very nominal charges to the public, especially to the poor. …
