[!TLDR]

The drain collects the charge carriers that reach it through the channel, while the gate controls how many carriers are allowed to flow.

When a suitable voltage is applied across the drain and source, charge carriers move through the channel from source to drain and constitute the drain current. The drain is the terminal at which these carriers, originally supplied by the source, are collected. The gate is the control terminal: by applying a proper (reverse) potential to it, the depletion regions in the channel are widened or narrowed, and this regulates the width of the conducting channel and hence the current through the device. In this way the gate voltage controls the drain current, which is the central idea behind a voltage-controlled FET.

[!ANSWER]

Drain — collects the charge carriers supplied by the source. Gate — controls the flow of charge carriers through the channel through the potential applied to it.
