Step 1. Enzymes are biological catalysts, almost always proteinaceous (except ribozymes), that speed up specific biochemical reactions without themselves being consumed.

Step 2. They are classified into six major classes based on the general type of reaction they catalyse:

  1. Oxidoreductases — catalyse oxidation-reduction by transferring H/O; e.g. alcohol dehydrogenase (alcohol + NAD+ → aldehyde + NADH2).
  2. Transferases — transfer a chemical group between molecules; e.g. glucokinase (glucose + ATP → glucose-6-phosphate + ADP).
  3. Hydrolases — catalyse hydrolysis reactions; e.g. sucrase (sucrose + H2O → glucose + fructose).
  4. Lyases — remove a group of atoms, leaving a double bond; e.g. histidine decarboxylase (histidine → histamine + CO2).
  5. Isomerases — catalyse structural rearrangement within a molecule; e.g. glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (glucose-6-P → fructose-6-P). …
