Nucleic acids are macromolecules built as long chains (polynucleotides) of nucleotide units, each nucleotide made of a five-carbon sugar, a phosphate group and a nitrogenous base; they carry and express the genetic information of the cell.
Step 2. Points of difference between DNA and RNA:
| Feature | DNA | RNA |
|---|---|---|
| Sugar | Deoxyribose | Ribose |
| Strands | Double-stranded (helix) | Usually single-stranded |
| Pyrimidine base | Thymine (and cytosine) | Uracil (and cytosine) |
| Location | Nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplasts | Nucleus (site of synthesis) and cytoplasm/ribosomes |
| Primary role | Hereditary material in most organisms | Protein synthesis (mRNA, rRNA, tRNA); hereditary material only in a few viruses (e.g. tobacco mosaic virus) |
