Concept understanding — Lysosomes

Discovered by Christian de Duve in 1953 and nicknamed 'suicidal bags', lysosomes are single-membrane-bound spherical bodies found only in eukaryotic cells, formed from pinched-off Golgi-body fragments and packed with hydrolytic enzymes capable of digesting carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.
