First seen by A. Kolliker in 1880 and finally named by Benda in 1897-98, mitochondria are ovoid-to-rod-shaped, pleomorphic, double-membrane organelles. A smooth, porin-studded, highly permeable outer membrane and a folded (cristae-bearing), highly impermeable inner membrane together divide the organelle into a narrow outer chamber and a matrix-filled inner chamber. Small stalked elementary particles (F1 particles/oxysomes) studding the cristae carry ATP synthase, which drives oxidative phosphorylation using the proton gradient the inner membrane maintains; the matrix holds nearly all the Krebs-cycle enzymes (except succinate dehydrogenase), plus the mitochondrion's own circular DNA and 70S ribosomes, which is exactly why mitochondria are called s …
