Step 2. As chyme leaves the stomach and enters the duodenum, it is met by bile juice (which neutralises the chyme's acidity) and by pancreatic juice, which is alkaline and rich in bicarbonate — together these secretions raise the pH of the intestinal contents from acidic to alkaline.
