Step 1. Jaundice is a condition marked by yellowing of the conjunctiva of the eyes and the skin, together with whitish/pale stools.

Step 2. These signs point to an abnormality in the metabolism or excretion of bilirubin, a pigment produced from the breakdown of haemoglobin.

Step 3. Jaundice can develop in either of two ways: (a) excessive breakdown of red blood cells raises bilirubin faster than the liver can process it, or (b) an obstruction blocks the normal flow of bile from the liver to the duodenum, backing up bilirubin.

Step 4. Bilirubin exists in both a water-soluble and a fat-soluble form, and the fat-soluble form is toxic to brain cells — which is why measuring serum bilirubin levels has important diagnostic value. …
