A short neck connects the crown to the root (made of two or three projections embedded in the gum). The basic shape of the tooth comes from dentin, a calcified connective tissue beneath the enamel, which encloses a central pulp cavity (filled with connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves) that extends into the root as the root canal. The root's dentin is covered by cementum, a bone-like tissue anchoring the root to its socket.
