Step 1. The sight, smell, or even just the thought of food triggers a neural reflex that starts salivary secretion, ready for the very first bite.

Step 2. Once food reaches the stomach, the tenth cranial (vagus) nerve and the hormone gastrin, secreted by the stomach itself, stimulate the gastric glands to release gastric juice.

Step 3. As acidic chyme moves into the duodenum, the intestinal mucosa releases secretin, which inhibits any further gastric-juice secretion (no longer needed) while stimulating the liver to release bile and the pancreas to release pancreatic juice, along with intestinal juice.

Step 4. The intestinal mucosa also releases cholecystokinin (CCK), which similarly stimulates pancreatic-enzyme and bile release, and additionally produces a feeling of satiety (fullness); and gastric inhibitory peptide (GIP), which further inhibits gastric secretion. …
