Classification of Hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons -- compounds made up entirely of carbon and hydrogen -- split first into two broad families by the bonding pattern between their carbon atoms: ALIPHATIC hydrocarbons (from Greek 'aleiphar', fat, since oils and fats were early sources) and AROMATIC hydrocarbons (from 'aroma', odour, since early examples came from fragrant plant extracts).
Aliphatic hydrocarbons further split by saturation: alkanes (general formula CnH2n+2) have only single carbon-carbon bonds and are saturated; alkenes (CnH2n) have at least one carbon-carbon double bond; alkynes (CnH2n-2) have at least one carbon-carbon triple bond. Alkenes and alkynes, having a localised multiple bond, are together called unsaturated hydrocarbons.
