Q.Write structural formulae of the following compounds: propane, ethyne, cyclobutane, ethene, benzene.
Step 1. Propane is the 3-carbon alkane (CnH2n+2, n=3): CH3-CH2-CH3, every bond a single bond.
Step 2. Ethyne is the 2-carbon alkyne (CnH2n-2, n=2): H-C(triple bond)C-H, a single triple bond between the two carbons, one H on each end.
Step 3. Cyclobutane is the 4-carbon saturated ring (cycloalkane): four CH2 groups joined in a closed square, each carbon bonded to two ring neighbours and two hydrogens.
Step 4. Ethene is the 2-carbon alkene (CnH2n, n=2): H2C=CH2, a double bond between the two carbons, two H's on each.
Step 5. Benzene is the aromatic 6-carbon ring, C6H6: drawn as a hexagon with alternating single and double bonds (the Kekule structure), one H on each ring carbon, though the real structure is a delocalised resonance hybrid (section 15.4.2).
Propane: CH3-CH2-CH3. Ethyne: H-C(triple bond)C-H. Cyclobutane: a 4-membered ring, (CH2)4 in a closed loop. Ethene: H2C=CH2. Benzene: a 6-membered ring with alternating single/double bonds, C6H6.
