A bonded warehouse is a government-licensed warehouse near ports that keeps imported goods until the importer pays the customs duty due on them.

Bonded warehouses are a special type of warehouse used in connection with foreign trade. They are licensed by the government and are generally located near seaports, docks or airports. Their main features are:

  • They store imported goods on which import (customs) duty is still unpaid.
  • The goods are kept under the supervision and control of customs authorities.
  • The importer is allowed to take delivery of the goods only after paying the customs duty.
