Principles of management are broad, tested guidelines for managerial decisions. Their nature is marked by universal application, flexibility, a general-guideline character, formation through practice, a behavioural focus, a cause-and-effect relationship, and a contingent (situational) use.

Principles of management are the basic truths or general guidelines that help managers take decisions and perform their functions effectively. The nature (features) of these principles is explained below:

1. Universal Application: The principles of management apply to all kinds of organisations — business and non-business, small and large — and at all levels of management. Their application is universal, though the extent may vary.

2. General Guidelines: They are broad guidelines for action, not rigid or ready-made solutions. They indicate the direction in which a problem may be handled, leaving room for managerial judgement.

3. Flexible: The principles are not fixed like scientific laws. They can be modified and adapted by the manager to suit changing situations and needs of the organisation.

4. Formed by Practice and Experimentation: These principles have evolved over time through the practical experience, observation and experiments of managers and thinkers. They are the result of trial and application in real situations.

5. Mainly Behavioural: Management deals largely with human beings. Hence the principles are behavioural in nature, aiming to influence and coordinate the behaviour of people at work.
